Many of you may know that my family has been dealing with the illness of my youngest son Kenny Smith Jr. He has LCH (Langerhans cell histiocytosis); LCH is the most common of the histiocytic disorders and occurs when the body accumulates too many immature Langerhans cells, a subset of the larger family of cells known as histiocytes. Langerhans cells are a type of white blood cell that normally help the body fight infection. In LCH, too many Langerhans cells are produced and build up in certain parts of the body where they can form tumors or damage organs. LCH is believed to occur in 1:200,000 children. Kj has undergone 7 cycles of chemotherapy and his body is slowly accepting the treatment. Although he is making head-way, there is still a long road ahead before he is back to our little Kj. We are blessed and continue to pray for his continued success with his treatment. This Saturday the Pediatric Oncology Department will be hosting St. Baldrick in honor of all children who have been taken and/or still battling cancer. My husband (Kenny Smith Sr) will be cutting all his hair off to honor Kj's battle and to raise money for childhood cancer research! Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers?
