Many of you are aware that my son Kyle and I raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation each year on St. Patrick’s Day. This year will be our 5th, and since we started back in 2008, we have raised over $20,000 with the help of friends and family who have generously donated their money, and a few that have even joined the team and shaved their heads along with us.
For those of you unaware of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, here is some information:
• Cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.
• Worldwide 160,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year.
• Two thirds of childhood cancer patients will have a long lasting chronic condition from the very treatment that helped save their lives.
• The National Cancer Institute spends 96% of its budget on adult cancers and only 4% of its budget on children’s cancers.
• Since established as an independent foundation in 2005, St. Baldrick’s has:
• Raised over $118 million for life-saving childhood cancer research
• Awarded over 100 Fellow and Scholar awards, to develop the childhood cancer research experts of tomorrow
• Funded grants at over 200 institutions focusing on childhood cancer research, making it possible to treat more children on clinical trials
•
This year we will be honoring 9-year old Landry Robinson of Texas (see attached picture). Landry is suffering from Medulloblastoma, a cancer of the brain, specifically in the center part of the cerebellum, which controls motor and balance skills.
