Lauren, or Lola -- as her close friends and family call her, is a bright, cheerful 12 year old who loves to play soccer, text her friends and play games like farmville on Facebook. She loves her top 40 music and is always listening to her ipod full of her favorite artists like Justin Bieber and Green Day. In December of 2009, Lola was diagnosed with undifferentiated soft tissue sarcoma in her pelvis. It has spread to her liver and lungs as well. After the original discovery/surgery, she was admitted to Children's Hospital in Oakland for the start of intense chemotherapy in addition to radiation. Through all of this difficult treatment, she has remained in good spirits often commented on by her care staff at both Children's and Alta Bates as the best smile any child could have. She is always uplifting though sometimes not feeling her best, she always has a big beautiful smile on her face through it all. She is such an inspiration to me (her mom). In support of her cancer and the loss of her hair, we are shaving our heads in solidarity to honor Lola, the most beautiful girl in the world.
