You heard it right - I'm shaving my head in solidarity with children who have cancer and typically lose their hair during treatment, while raising critical funds for childhood cancer research!
Why am I doing this? As many of you know, I have been coaching youth soccer since I graduated from college. I love the game and it is incredibly rewarding to help the kids develop as soccer players and as people. For the last 9 years I have been coaching my kids in rec and travel soccer. A few years back, one of the girls that I had coached passed away after a battle with cancer. We were all very moved by the situation, but did not really know what we could do to help.
Now, cancer is once again affecting one of the soccer families in my town. John G. was on my team and his mother Jessica was the manager of our team. John's younger brother Teddy is currently in treatment for an undifferentiated sarcoma. Thanks to St. Baldrick's and all of the people in the area that have participated over the last few years, I have found a way to help.
Now, for those of you who know me well, this is a big deal for me. Let's face it, from the time that I had my first "bowl" haircut in 3rd grade, hair has been a pretty big part of my image. I was in high school in the 80's, so I have had "the bowl", "the mullet", "the hippie", "the modified mullet", "the rockstar", "the extra long mullet". I can safely say that I never feathered or permed my hair, but that may have been better than the 6 variations of the mullet. Now the time has come to shave it all off.
Please make a donation on my behalf to support childhood cancer research so that all children diagnosed with cancer will have a better chance for a cure.
