I'm shaving my head to raise money for childhood cancer research! This is a really important campaign to me because it has been so present in my family with two cousins and my sister all having different forms of childhood cancer.
When my sister was 9, she was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer. I was 11 at the time and remember how difficult it was. She had to go on different diets included fat-free and iodine-free. I also remember when she had radiation and we were not allowed be near her for a long time. It felt weird for me, but I can't imagine how isolating it was for my sister.
My cousin, Kilian, was diagnosed with Leukemia around 2010. He is since done with treatment, but him and his family continue to be a major support to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). In 2015, Kilian was the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Boy of Year. Also in 2015, Kilian shaved his dad's and his doctor's heads on TV for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
Lastly, I am shaving in memory of my cousin, Abby. She had a rare form of childhood cancer when she was very young (I think it was around age 3). Luckily, she was able to get treatment and it wasn't until she was 15 that she was diagnosed with another rare form of cancer; this one with no cure. She lost her battle on April 20, 2011.
