Imagine fighting for your life. Imagine having to fight for your life everyday. Imagine that you’re fighting for your life so that you can one day: learn to ride a bike, have a first kiss, learn to drive, vote in an election for the first time, or graduate from school. In my profession I see people suffering all the time. I try to do what I can within my training to help them. Sometimes, the best I can do is take a blood pressure and reassure them that the ambulance is on its way. Although, I don’t want to see anyone suffer, the ones that really get to me are the children. I often leave wishing I could have done more. Well now I’m doing more. I’ve volunteered to help raise money for children fighting cancer through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. You get this one life; it’s not fair that this is how these kids have to live it. They didn’t do anything to deserve cancer. They didn’t ask for it. Yet they fight like heroes to beat it. But they need our help. On April 14th, I’m joining a team of firefighters and paramedics, among others, at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin. As a show of support for the kids there fighting cancer, we’re all having our heads shaved. And it’s through your donations that we’re raising money for cancer research.
