Since I was young, I was interested in every aspect of medicine. As a student “cancer” caught my attention even more. I saw cancer, just as I saw other aspects of medicine, simply by their definitions. It was merely something I heard about, something I learned about, and something I studied about. My strong interest in learning about cancer resulted in an interest to find a cure. I began to follow St. Baldrick’s events over the last several years, and was intrigued by their bold statement to find a cure. I casually would mention participating in the event the following year, but each year I seemed to get preoccupied.
However, circumstances are much different this year. Cancer entered the lives of my family, and has changed my entire perspective. My interest in finding a cure, has become a more than an interest, but a needing desire. I’ve realized that no matter how much time a person spends learning about cancer, no definition, or study can prepare you for finding out what cancer really is. Cancer took on a whole new meaning, after spending so much of the past year seeing the ones I love go through tests, surgeries, chemotherapy, and all the junk cancer comes with. I’m committed to finding a cure, not only for my family members, but for all the families that are also learning that cancer’s definition cannot be defined by any textbook.
As part of my commitment, I will be shaving my head in solidarity with kids fighting cancer. It’s a “bald” statement, one in which I also hope can raise money for a cure. Please support me with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.
Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. So when I ask for your support, I'm really asking you to support these kids and their families. May my bald statement help you to see cancer isn’t just a definition amongst the aspects of medicine, but an unwelcomed aspect of many families’ lives. Thank you!
