As many of us are, I have been personally affected by cancer. The first year that I shaved my head I wasn't really planning on doing it. I was bartending the event and they showed a short film that explained how children's cancer is different than adult cancer, yet these kids have to take the same drugs as adults. After we watched the film, one of the people putting on the event spoke about losing her kid to cancer and I knew I just kind of had to shave my head. My own experiences with loved ones dying of cancer had come rushing back to me and, on top of that, a lot of my beautifully selfless friends had already shaved their heads and the sense of community surrounding the room was overwhelming. I rose $2,500 on the spot (which I mostly attribute to having a crazy head of hair at the time), so this year I am hoping to raise $3,000. It is with this sense of community that I offer my hair and beard to the research of childhood cancer and the hopeful eradication of it.
