I am honoring Charles L., age 3, who lives right here in Indianapolis on behalf of my co-worker’s son who lost his battle at age 3.
Here is my “WHY”:
I worked with a wonderful lady back in my Blue Cross Blue Shield days. When we first met, we both had daughters around the same age. Then, we both became pregnant a month apart. She was a month before me. We would support each other in our aches and pains during our pregnancy. She delivered in September of 1988; me in October 1988. She gave birth to Donnie and me Jon. We would share the love and joy we had for our children; shared the accomplishments and mile stones. One day, she shared that her little guy had cancer. How could that be? Life was going so well. The pain and suffering he endured was horrible. He passed away at age 3. I’ve been blessed with having my son. Watching him grow up and seeing the accomplishments and miles stones he made in his life. With each of those, I am fully aware that my co-worker never got to see that with her son. It still makes me so sad inside when I think about it.
I am now working at NAMIC who hosts St. Baldrick’s events to raise money for children cancer. I didn’t know this foundation existed until now. I've attended 2 of the past NAMIC St. Baldrick's events. It was so powerful to see individuals, kids and adults, shaving their hair off for children will cancer. I made donations to the shavees from NAMIC, but I wanted to do more but wasn't sure if I could shave my head. I did some research and found that that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. Knowing this helped me to decide THIS YEAR would be the year to help. Go big or go home! So, I put my name on the list of shavees. After doing that I found the following quote by Lily Tomlin, “I said, “Somebody should do something about that.” Then I realized I am SOMEBODY.” I can do this!
Since I have decided to do something about it and raise money for cures, now I need your help! Will you make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers.
THANK YOU for taking the time to read my “WHY” and donating for cures!
