Last year my cousin Olivia was diagnosed with a rare and deadly form of bone cancer called Osteosarcoma. We watched with pride and awe at how Olivia and her family joined together to battle the cancer and to inform themselves about both traditional and unconventional treatment options. Unfortunately, what they quickly learned was that the treatment alternatives had not changed in 40 years. In search of alternatives, Olivia’s father Michael was able to secure a European treatment drug that was unable to gain FDA approval in the US for lack of funding. Eye-opening to say the least. Olivia has finished her chemotherapy and is in remission. But the recurrence risk for this form of cancer is very high. This effort prompted Michael and friends to establish the Osteosarcoma Collaborative to raise $1.5M for a research grant to find a potential cure.
Our fundraising efforts here are to support the Osteosarcoma Collaborative to reach that goal and find a treatment for this insidious form of cancer for Oliva, and children like her. There is reason to be hopeful. Please join us!!
