Well, it’s that time a year again..
St. Baldrick’s!!!
As a parent we are faced with many decisions to make for our children to steer them in the right direction. Last year when Reed (8 yrs. old) shaved his head for St. Baldrick’s, Kirsten was so disappointed when we told her we didn’t think she should do it. We told her she was too young and it was too big of a decision.
So for the past year, she has been waiting for this time to arrive. When she asked this year, Rob and I just looked at each other. We could see how much she wanted to do it. We told her all about the many other opportunities that she could participate in to make a difference, without actually shaving her head. But that isn’t what she wants to do to help. I know that many of you are thinking, “Well, you are the parent just say no. I would not let my daughter shave her head at 5 years old”. We thought about saying no again, but we had no good answer why. Why were we telling her no? Why couldn’t she do it? Why was it ok for Reed and not her? Was it because she was going to look different? Was it because people were going to stare at her? Was it because kids were going to say mean things...Well, isn’t that the whole meaning of St. Baldrick’s, to create awareness of childhood cancer? So we didn’t say no. We did explain to her everything she might experience. We watched videos of people happy and people who were crying when they shaved their heads. We told her that her hair would be completely gone and would take a very long time to grow back, some people might even make fun of you and the way you look. She turned to me and said, “We can buy some pretty hats and headbands. I don’t care what people say. I will just tell them I am doing it for St. Baldrick’s and for kids with cancer.” So it was an easy decision to make. Our 5 year old showed us what the true meaning of St. Baldrick’s is.
So this year for St. Baldrick’s day…
It’s Kirsten’s turn!
Please consider supporting Kirsten and St. Baldrick’s by donating to an amazing cause!
From the day she was born she always kept us on our toes. We have always known how independent, strong, brave, and beautiful she is. Now she gets to show all of you what a kind hearted, beautiful little girl, both inside and out she truly is! We must be doing something right as parents to have been blessed with 2 of the most amazing children.
Watch out world…
This confident, strong, little girl is going to make a difference!
