Every 2 minutes a parent will hear the words “your child has cancer”. Those 4 words change everything and treatment takes over the family’s life. Even more devastating, 1 of 5 kids diagnosed in the US and Canada will not survive. Of those that do survive, 2 out of 3 kids will have long term side effects from the treatment.
It doesn’t have to be this way and we can come together to change the statistics and the lives of children.
This is why I am shaving my head to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation on Saturday March10th at Somersfield Academy, Bermuda. I chose to honor Brennan, my 5 year old friend in treatment for leukemia.
St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s mission is to conquer childhood cancer through research and support the discovery of less painful and more effective treatments.
Science is working to change childhood cancer forever;
• Smart medicine targeting only the cancer without poisoning the rest of the body
• Personalized treatments tailored to specific genetic composition
• Early detection and hopefully prevention
This progress is only possible by funding research. Shockingly, only 4% of national cancer funding is dedicated to childhood cancer research, so St. Baldrick’s mission is to fill the funding gap. Think of the great things that children want to be when they grow up… isn’t that worth more than 4%?
