When I was in the 4th grade, my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. After 7 years of going in and out of remission, the cancer turned metastatic and he passed away. During his treatment, he experienced severe weight loss and, of course, hair loss. I remember his refusal to take pictures with me and other relatives at our last family gatherings before his passing. I could see how uncomfortable he was to be photographed. Cancer had not only stripped him of his health, but his self confidence as well.
On top of all the physical and emotional pain that cancer patients go through, they shouldn't have to worry about society's trivial, yet toxic standards. Although my hair is something I've always been vain about, I choose to shave my head in support of those that do not have the choice and to help show that "bald is beautiful".
St. Baldrick's focuses on raising funds for cancer research for children. Kids' cancer is different from adult cancer yet its research extremely underfunded. I am blessed to be healthy and I cannot imagine what it must be like for any child that has to fight against cancer. Help me reach my goal and make a donation to help fund the research for a cure. Every dollar helps!
