It was the tape. Of all the things to fear, he dreaded changing the dressing around his port. He laughed when his sister tugged the first chunk of his hair out, and later when his mom took a vacuum to his balding head. He was the first to point out “the space ship building” as they neared the children’s hospital, and giggled madly at the mention of “the donut machine” when it came time for another CT.  But when the nurse unraveled the heavy white tape, nothing could stifle the tears that fell down his face. In the Pediatrics-Hematology/Oncology unit, my little brother and I would play all day laughing like normal kids until the nurse came to redress his port, and  the tears pooled in his eyes... we were far from normal. Diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Adam's treatment was long and he was left with many scars, but he is a survivor of childhood cancer! Other kids are not as lucky as Adam, one in five children diagnosed with cancer will not make it. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is dedicated to funding the most promising research to change these odds and fight childhood cancer!
