I'm shaving my head to raise money for childhood cancer research! Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So I decided to do something about it by raising money for cures.
Last year, 2015, St. Baldrick's raised $36,960,760 at 1,293 events around the country, with 50,223 "shavees" participating. I was proud to be part of that.
So why, at the age of 63, do I want to go bald in a month? It's my way of giving back and giving thanks.
32 years ago, on January 17, 1984, I was operated on for testicular cancer. I had a 2nd operation 2 weeks later to see if the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes in my abdomen. It had not, thank God.
While I was recovering from my 2nd operation (I was "on the table" for 5 hours) I met a very young boy one day, around 3 years old, who had leukemia. His cancer was in remission when I met him. (I think his name was Tommy or Joey, but I cannot recall for sure). He had all of the energy and delight that a 3-year old has with life. I remember his mother smiling at his energy level.
My "bugs" haven't come back, at least not yet. His did. The boy's family was friends with my parents. My mother called me about year or 2 later and told me that the boy had passed.
So, I'm going bald for him, and for all of the other children who have been taken by childhood cancer in the interim. I'm going bald because I want to be part of the solution by raising money for this incredibly worthwhile cause.
If anyone is interested in making a donation to St. Baldrick's on my behalf, my "Shavee ID" is 825672. You can find out more info about St. Baldrick's at www.stbaldricks.org.
And if anyone, male or female, wants to join me in becoming a "Baldinator" on March 5, by all means sign up or contact me for more information.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to read the longest posting I've ever made on Facebook. Have an awesome day!
