I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

My son, Matthias, was diagnosed with pediatric cancer on December 10, 2008 at just three months old. My beautiful infant endured surgeries, chemotherapy, laser treatments, and cryotherapy before he could walk or talk. Bilateral retinoblastoma (cancer of both eyes) eventually took both eyes, leaving him completely blind before his first birthday. He will remain at heightened risk for other types of cancer for the rest of his life. Matthias is now an incredibly intelligent, charming, and sassy seven year old. We are incredibly grateful for him and have no regrets about the choices we made during treatment. However, in 2012 I decided I needed to join the fight against cancer. Our only treatment options for Matthias were chemo, radiation, and surgery. I knew we could help find something better. I shaved for St. Baldrick's at the Indianapolis event in 2012 and 2013. Matthias served as one of the five St. Baldrick's Ambassadors in 2013. I ran the Chicago Marathon to raise money for St. Baldrick's in 2014. This year, I am happy to join the 46 Mommas team in Las Vegas. I've been growing my hair for two years. It's time to one again shave this perfectly round head in honor of my son and all of the brave kids fighting cancer.
