Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So I decided to do something about it by raising money for cures.
Have you ever heard of St. Baldrick’s? St. Baldrick’s was started in March 2000 after a challenge between friends looking for a way to give back. From then it became an annual event and is now nationwide and has raised millions of dollars. The event that I’m participating is in honor of two boys that my Aunt Laurie knew at New Hope Solebury High School.
You may be wondering what all this has to do with me. In 2013 my dad was diagnosed with cancer and I felt helpless and I knew I needed to do something. I spent a long time trying to figure out what I could do - after all, I'm a kid, what could I really do? Well, when my Aunt Laurie began planning last year’s New Hope St. Baldrick’s event and I knew I had to get involved. But how? I could help organize, I could help raise money, I could help raise awareness by talking to people, but I wanted to do something that would keep people talking, that would make a statement about how important funding childhood cancer research really is - my sisters have both donated their hair, Ainsley just did it for a second time!
So, when I heard that I could be a shavee, it was an easy decision for me to make. I raised $1,310 last year!! Raising money and being a shavee at last year’s event made such an impact on me, my family and friends that I decided I wanted to participate every year. Last summer we moved to Maryland, but I will be raising money and participating in their year’s event as a shavee once again. If you can make it to the event, I'd love to see you - there is so much to do!
