Hello, all.
Recently, I bleached and shaved my hair into a mohawk as a part of a swimming team activity.
When I got home for spring break, the security guard who has known me for the seven years I lived at my apartment asked me if I was a resident. He didn't recognize me. People seem surprised when I say "thank you," as if they expect me to be some kind of punk. Hair plays a part of a person's identity that most of us don't even realize.
When those who undergo cancer treatment lose their hair, society casts them out into an entirely different group, intentional or not. This time I shave my hair, I do so as a monument for those less fortunate.
If the act of shaving my head has even the remote chance of helping me help these kids; of helping me put these kids back in school; of helping me improve the lives of others around me- if all that takes is giving up some of my dignity, then I will do it gladly ten times over. I would dye it bright pink if that was all it took.
But that's not all it takes. It takes your support. Please consider donating even a dollar, or simply sharing my message with others.
