I have yet to meet someone without a cancer connection in their life. A friend, family member, colleague...we all have personal connections to cancer. Cancer took my mom from me 17 years ago, and I am still devastated over losing her. If my mom were here today, she would be incredibly proud about my decision to shave my head to raise money for childhood cancer research. Childhood cancer hit close to home for us when I was growing up: first we lost a boy on our street, and later in high school, one of my best friends had cancer and survived.
My position at Upstate Medical University is on the University side, however, I still walk through the hospital almost every day. Many days I pass by sick children and their families in the hallway, and the kids always look happy and hopeful, even when the parents look exhausted and overwhelmed. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to spend time with some families affected by childhood cancer, that is when I was first inspired to shave my head...it has taken me this long to get up the courage to actually do it.
In planning, I decided that it would mean the world to me if I could raise money and shave my head in honor of one or two children being treated at Upstate's brand new cancer center. I am excited to say that I now have two honorees: Cassie, a 5 year old girl and Roman, a 4 year old boy.
Now I need your help!!! Please take a look at my giant head of hair, and please make a donation to help me reach my goal of $5,000.
