My sister, Briksten, was diagnosed with JMML in May 2006; she was almost 4yrs old. The only treatment available which would give her a 50/50 chance of survival was a bone marrow transplant, and I happened to be a 10 out of 10 match! They took the bone marrow from my hip bones and gave it to her on July 6, 2006. My cells started making new blood cells for my sister within 10 days of being inside her body. Unfortunately, because of all the chemotherapy that she had to have to kill her bone marrow, her organs were damaged and she became an angel on August 25, 2006 (2 days after she turned 4yr).
I miss my sister A LOT! I don't like to talk about her because it makes me very sad. She would be 11yrs old and in the 6th grade this year. I wish that there would have been a cure for her, so that she could be with our family now. My other sister REALLY misses her too, and I have two other brothers that have only met her as an angel.
I'm shaving my head to raise money for childhood cancer research! I remember my Dad and I shaving our heads when my sister was getting ready to go into the hospital (she helped shave us; her smiles were so BIG!)
I raise the money because my family knows how little information there was on JMML when my sister was diagnosed, and without funding other families will go through the same pains we did. I have since have found out that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers, and childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded.
Please help me by donating to the St. Baldrick's Foundation to help them find cures for childhood cancers. Hopefully, your donation will help save someones sister or brother!
