On April 15th, 1993, my first cousin Darshana Magan was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogneous Leukemia (CML) cancer of the white blood cells. CML is extremely rare in children and makes up no more than 2% of all leukemia cases. She was told that the leukemia had progressed to the blast-phase, giving her only 3 months to live.
After numerous tests, scans, and a bone marrow biopsy, the doctors mapped out her clinical trial. There was no textbook treatment to follow so every step she took to rid the cancer from her body was essentially a risk to her life.
She eventually underwent 3 months of chemotherapy and 1 week of high-dose radiation. With these treatments came the widely common side effects including the loss of all her hair. Fortunately on July 23, 1993, she received a bone marrow transplant from her brother who was a near perfect match.
Fast forward to 2014, she's alive and healthy and has been cancer free for over 20 years! It was because of her family and the many donations from different people and organizations is which she owes her success over cancer to.
Darshana has also dedicated so much time and money to give back to those who helped her defeat her cancer and inspired me to make my own mark in this world. I want to dedicate this Brave the Shave opportunity to her and to all those children who have to struggle with cancer. Let this story serve as a message that We Can Defeat Pediatric Cancer.
I also want to dedicate this Brave the Shave event in the loving memory of my grandmother who recently passed away due to cancer. I know she would be proud of me.
