As some of you may have noticed I have been wearing my hair a little longer over the past few months. This is not because I have grown bored of the quick wash, towel dry and out the door advantages of the short cut, but because I have committed to shaving my head for St Baldrick’s .
In the 5 years since I last shaved I have lost one good friend to cancer and have several friends either in treatment or in remission. Whilst St Baldrick’s is all about childhood cancers the effects of the research are far reaching.
This year we are setting up a new event in Bermuda at our children’s school (Somersfield Academy) which will take place on June 24th during their Community Day. The whole school will be involved in the fund raising with events ranging from sponsored walks to bake sales and whacky hair days and of course the head shaving for the braver ones.
As one of the organizers of the event, and believing that there is no better way to lead than by example I have volunteered to go bald again. My 11 year old son Toby will also be shaving with me.
My hairdresser has offered to assist by volunteering to dye my hair in the school colors of emerald green and navy blue the week before the event. I will (reluctantly) do this if either I receive a single donation of $500 (or more) or if I reach my fund raising target of $5000.
Whilst large donations are always very welcome it is the small donations that really make up the numbers. So even if you can only afford to donate a few dollars it would be very much appreciated.
St Baldrick’s has been instrumental in making dramatic advances in the fight against this devastating disease but the war isn’t over. 1 in 5 children currently diagnosed with cancer will still die from the disease. Please help me to improve the odds for our children.
