In honor of two sweet kids, Austin & Rebecca, Rachel & I are joining the St. Baldrick's Foundation and raising money for childhood cancer research. Rachel's friend and fellow tumbler, Austin Gallagher, is a two-time cancer survior and Rebecca Meyer, the little sister of Carolyn, one of Rachel's best friends is still in the fight. Austin & Rebecca are truly remarkable children who come from equally remarkable families!
I am participating in this event with a few more special people in mind who are also plagued by this diease. They are: my dear friend and tower of strength, Liz Martin; David's best friend, Michael Seidman, aka, "Dr. Mike" who is like family to us and Joanne Ellis, my sister Julie's best friend.
So, what actually happens at one of these events? In a show of solidarity to children (and adults) who lose their hair when going through treatment, volunteers, heretofore known as "shavees", get down with the "Bald is Beautiful" thing and lose their hair, too!
The name "St. Baldrick's" (no religious affiliation) is a little play on words. Since the head shaving events are scheduled in March, around St. Patrick's Day, and shavees get bald for the cause, the name just works!
Krissy Gallagher, Austin's mom, coordinates the HUGE event here in Cleveland Hts. This year she added "Bobs for Baldricks", an option for those of us who may chicken out as a shavee. That's where Rachel & I come in. We can still donate our hair, we'll just walk away sporting a cute little bob! Depending on the length, donated hair will be sent to one of these fabulous organizations: Pantene's Beautiful Lengths, Locks of Love or Wigs for Kids.
While you're here, check out some of the photos from past events!
I believe all our lives are touched by cancer in some way. We can't all be research scientists but what we can do is help keep this important research going! Please consider making a donation. Every dollar makes a difference.
On behalf of the children with cancer and the people who love them, we thank you!
