This will be my 5th time shaving at St. Baldrick's to help raise money for childhood cancer research. I remember seeing a St. Baldrick's event several years ago and thinking how awesome it was. Once I decided to get involved and shave, I went to their website and searched through the children's stories to find a child to honor with my shave. I searched for a child in my area and one near my sons age and found a 9 year old little girl named Colleen. I went about my business raising money and didn't think about the little girl all that much. That is, until her mother showed up at the event to thank us personally for shaving in her daughter's honor.
My wife befriended Colleen's mother and we became friends with the family. Sadly, Colleen passed away not long after. It was one of the most moving services I've ever been to. The next year, I dyed my hair pink in honor of Colleen. It was her favorite color. I raised more than $1,500 and so did my 10 year old son. It was a very emotional event as part of a team that Colleen's mom put together.
Last year, I joined another team... Team Denny. Denny was a student at The Montessori School of Raleigh where I work. Denny wasn't even 3 years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. Denny has fought this terrible disease for almost two years and has been through numerous procedures and surgeries. It is hard to imagine the journey his family has taken over these past two years. I so admire their courage and strength. It is truly an honor to know Denny and his family and it is the least I can do to raise a few hundred dollars and shave my head to help combat this awful disease.
Please consider a small (or large) donation in honor of Denny and in memory of Colleen. And hug your precious children each and every day. Life is made of little moments... be sure to count your blessings.
Sincerely,
David Hughens
