I wanted to alert you to my upcoming "hair cut." Yes, that’s right – I’ve got some pattern baldness happening! I am shaving my head for the third straight year in solidarity with children and their families facing childhood cancer.
Besides shaving, I am volunteering on the event committee to help spread the St. Baldrick's message. I am inspired by Mike and Stacy DeBritz who started the Proctor’s event in honor of their daughter, Audrey, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009 and is now cancer free!
I am also inspired by Jennifer Rathbone, our event co-organizer. Jennifer’s daughter, Ila Jean, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was 18 months old. After a short remission, her cancer returned. Sadly, there were no further treatment options for Ila, and she died shortly after our first St. Baldrick’s event in 2012. I am proud to shave in honor of both Audrey and Ila.
Our children are precious, and childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the U.S. Raising funds for childhood cancer research is critical for finding a cure. St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer.
Please watch this three minute video which clearly shows why the need for research funds persists.
For me, going bald continues to be a small sacrifice compared with the challenges faced by children and their families living with childhood cancer. I have an ambitious goal this year, and I appreciate your support in any amount - every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers.
