My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was in the second grade. I was young and didn't fully understand the situation, but I understood the terror and grief that my family endured; and I understood even better the joy and relief we all felt when we were told she was in remission. Just a few years ago, cancer reared it's ugly head again when she was diagnosed a second time, this time in her lungs. After treatment and chemotherapy, Grandma beat back that demon a second time, and this past October we celebrated her 80th birthday.
My grandmother is one of the strongest women I have ever met, and I love her very much. I can't imagine what it would be like to have to go through all that with a child. A child who has barely lived, barely even learned the meaning of strength. A child who, like me back in second grade, probably understands very little about what is going on, apart from the fear and the sadness. No child should have to endure that.
So, I'm shaving my head to raise money for childhood cancer research! Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So I decided to do something about it by raising money for cures. Now I need your help! Will you make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers.
