I've answered the call to be a hero! I'm having my head shaved to stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer.... Hold on a second....
Those who know me know that bald is my status quo. I surrendered to my receding hairline a long time ago and embraced my inner baldness. I tell people I have a French hair cutter. His name is Gillette. But I made this choice in lieu of a combover or to grow out the horshoe pattern around my head. And I have grown to enjoy the refreshing feeling I get from a cool burst of air against my head. But I get to choose this anti-coiffe. Patients undergoing chemo do not. I signed on to this for the children who are forced to learn way too early that bald can be beautiful, because they are inherently beautiful, because life is beautiful. They are bald because they are fighting for their lives, and so I am proud to support this cause in their honor, and specifically to honor the memory of "Superman Sam" Sommer whose 8 years of life inspire me.
Inspired by Christian Bale in "American Hustle," effective immediately, I am calling my St. Baldrick's effort, "Combover for the Cure." I last shaved my head on Friday, January 17, 2014, and no razor shall again touch my head until March 31 in Chicago. If everyone else is foregoing their preferred appearance for this cause, then I can too. I can't wait to see just how much (or little?) my hair grows in the interim.
Please support me and my "Combover for the Cure" with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.
Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. So when I ask for your support, I'm really asking you to support these kids. Thank you!
