Folks, we have all experienced cancer in our lives, whether it be a family member or close friend. As you know in the past I have donated my hair to Lock’s of Love. Lucky for me at age 43 I STILL DON’T HAVE GRAY HAIR (no joke) so still can donate my pony tail to help make wigs for children who suffer from cancer. After years of having long hair, this year I will one up the proposition and add a complete head shave to raise money for children’s cancer research. This may actually be my last chance to donate hair. Who knows, maybe it will all come back gray! Donate to find out! ;-)
The WORK Connection: VMware
Last year I was convinced to attend the St. Baldrick’s Foundation event for the first time by my fellow VMware employees, saw the cause, and opened my big mouth and said “YES!” My hope is to help get VMware involved on a larger and regular basis.
The SCHOOL Connection: Ain’t no Wahoo gonna be a HOKIE!
And then, as a Virginia Tech HOKIE, I actually donated to a University of Virginia Wahoo who shaved her head for St. Baldrick’s. No Wahoo will outdo a HOKIE! ;-) Seriously though, Katie was an inspiration, and has been an awesome volunteer with me for years at Muscular Dystrophy Association summer camp in Virginia. When she said she was going to do it, it was a no brainer to donate.
My FEAR: Not what you think.
Believe it or not, I don’t fear shaving my head or having to remember sunscreen and bandannas for the next several months. My fear is actually this: actually asking you to donate. No joke. You know me, I am a volunteer time giver. But when it comes to donations I usually defer to others who are more assertive on the fundraising front. Ironic, I send y’all all kinds of stories and ramblings with rubber chickens over the years… volunteer out the wazzu. No fear there. But when it comes to asking for a donation, it’s hairy groundhog see’s his shadow! Not this time.
A Quick hit:
So this is a quick hit! I did not give this a month or more. I am only giving this a week, to be right in front of you with a sincere ask of your support. And then it will be over, and I will go back to doing what I always do for you, TONS ‘o’ laughs with rubber chickens… globally. Best to y’all!
The official verbiage:
I'm having my head shaved to stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer, but more importantly, to raise money to find cures.
Please support me with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.
Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. So when I ask for your support, I'm really asking you to support these kids. Thank you!
