Each month the Wake County Board of Education recognizes students who demonstrate good character and serve as role models for others in their schools. The program has been in existence for over two decades and is called Spotlight on Students.
All too often students are highlighted for their courage as they deal with cancer. Even though they endure pain, uncertainty, and time away from school for treatment, these brave children remain actively engaged in school and focused on learning.
As each student is recognized, it is my privilege to present a plaque on behalf of the Board of Education and stand with the student as their accomplishments are read to a standing-room only crowd. More often than not students fighting cancer who are "Spotlighted" have lost their hair. Sometimes they wear a scarf or a hat. Many times their heads are bare and bald. Always there is a gleam of hope in their eyes and a smile on their faces.
Also, Kristi Winters Walker recently passed away after struggling valiantly with breast cancer. She is the same age as my oldest daughter and in many ways resembles both of my girls. In honor of her life and as a gesture of support for WCPSS students fighting cancer, I am shaving my head.
Thank you for your generosity.
