Yes, I’ve decided to GO BALD again this year for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This will be my third year shaving my head for a great cause. After doing it for the first time in 2011, I realized the impact that I, along with all of the donations I collected, made on pediatric cancer research.
If you’re not familiar with St. Baldrick’s, here is a little background. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.
St. Baldrick's funds more in grants for childhood cancer research than any other organization except the U.S. government. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has funded over $103 million in childhood cancer research grants.
I originally decided to get involved with St. Baldrick’s because one of my very good golfing buddies, Josh, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), in 2006, when he was 10 years old. Because of pediatric cancer research that was funded by St. Baldrick’s, he is now 16 years old and is cancer-free. He went through about 3 ½ years of intense chemotherapy treatment and is now able to enjoy life just as a junior in high school should. He plays golf for his school team (TF South), he fishes anytime or anywhere he can, he has a part-time job and even though, I can still beat him on the golf course, he can still kick my butt at ping pong.
Even though, Josh is a survivor, some of his friends along the way haven’t been so fortunate. In November 2011, Josh lost a very good “chemo” buddy, Chris, because there just wasn’t enough research done on Chris’s type of cancer. There's still a long way to go.
