First, a jaw-dropping announcement, and then I’m going to hit you up for money.
I've answered the call to be a hero!
I have joined a team of friends and this March 8th, I intend to have my head shaved to raise money to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. My team, called “Paigé’s Posse” has been shaving their heads for three consecutive years, and as the Posse enters their fourth year in the event, I have decided to join them and the cause.
Paigé was born on April 4, 1988 & was only 6 years old when she was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). She fought hard, and with a wonderful spirit, however in February of 1997 Paigé relapsed, and sadly, only 6 months later on August 7, 1997 she succumbed to the disease. Paigé was only 9 years old when she passed away.
Now, you all know me – Friendly Rachel with the mop of blonde curls – I thought long and hard before making my decision to participate. I’m not a glamorous actress or a stunning model, I’m just plain Rachel, and shaving my head is going to be a huge deal for me. But if you think about it, this is still a choice for me – unlike children who are dealing with cancer and are going through treatments that make their hair fall out. THEY don’t have a choice, they didn’t ask for this. I don’t have children myself, but can you imagine having to go through that with your child? Can you imagine being a parent and having to say goodbye to your 9-year-old baby? So, terrifying or not, this is the least I can do to show my support, and to try to help the research along so that maybe one of these days there won’t be such a need to make such bold gestures, because they won’t be needed anymore.
I’d be really delighted if you’d make a donation – Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers – So when I ask for your support, I’m really asking you to support these kids!
