I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research with: Plain "Bald" Eagles

January 31, 2013

Seventeen years ago today, January 31, 1996, my knowledge of childhood cancer completely changed when our daughter, Abbey, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma of the right tibia. I’ll never forget that day. It was a gloomy winter day and Abbey was recovering from a biopsy at Akron Children’s Hospital. A man whom we had never met introduced himself and then asked us to follow him to a conference room. When we sat down and we heard the words “YOUR DAUGHTER HAS CANCER” I felt as though I was having an “out of body experience.” All of a sudden I was looking down on two pathetic looking parents who could not believe what they were hearing. No, this couldn’t be our 14-year-old daughter? Abbey was beautiful, smart and our baby. She was kind, had many friends and was a wonderful dancer ever since her Grandma took her to dance class at the age of 3. Chemotherapy? Oh no, will she loose her hair? How will she go to school? Will someone have to quit their job? Will our sons be able to stay in college? How will we afford Abbey’s care?

Most of you know our story and the courage and love Abbey showed through her treatments, surgeries and many setbacks.

The statistics are staggering. One in five children who are diagnosed will not survive. Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every three minutes. Unlike adult cancers, childhood cancers are not diagnosed because of a child’s lifestyle. Osteosarcoma, Abbey’s cancer, still only has a 60% survival rate. St. Baldrick’s donations fund research, e.g. to find treatments that will not kill the good cells along with the bad. Treatments that can be personalized for each patient – not “one size fits all” and much more.

The Canton St. Baldrick’s Event will be at Quaker Steak & Lube on Sunday, March 24, 2013 and I WILL BE AMONG THOSE WHO WILL BE SHAVING THEIR HEAD. Yes, ME, Nan Foltz! I want to make a difference and help children and their family’s journey end differently than ours.

Please help me CONQUER KID'S CANCER by donating toward my $4,000 goal and come watch me get my head shaved!
