You heard it right - I'm shaving my head again in solidarity with children who have cancer and typically lose their hair during treatment, while raising critical funds for childhood cancer research!
I will be hosting my second event this year in addition to shaving my head for the 3rd time. The entire Village of Romeo, Michigan has offered to host and we are hoping for a huge turn out.
While there are a lot of great efforts in the fight for a cure for cancer, childhood cancer research is still drastically underfunded. Treatments designed for adults can not always work with an adjusted dose on a small child.
Since its inception in 2000, St. Baldrick's has raised more than 50 million dollars and grown into the world's largest fundraising event for childhood cancer. Worldwide 160,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year and despite tremendous progress, cancer remains the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.
While battling cancer, children lose not only their hair but years of their childhood, and sometimes their lives. In comparison to their struggle, shaving my head is a small sacrifice, and the money raised will make a difference for children with cancer now and in the future.
This year I do this in honor our friends Anne and Loris Costa of Washington Twp, whose son Noah, age 7, is currently in treatment after a relapse of Neuroblastoma. Noah plays soccer in our AYSO program along with his two brothers.
I also do this in honor of my friends Jameson and Emily MacBeth, who lost their 2-year-old daughter to cancer in 2002.
I know times are tough (better than many, i'm still job searching), but childhood cancer does not take a break in a bad economy. Even a small donation would be appreciated.
If you cannot afford to give, maybe you can volunteer to help, we could use the extra hands. We hope everyone can make it to the event this year.
Thank you
Michael Fiscus
