Why I do this... The transition from Elementary School to Middle School is hard, but it is even harder when you are battling cancer right from the start! I was 12 years old and just entering the seventh grade when I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. My friends could not understand what I was going through and were mostly just scared. They thought it was contagious or that I was going to die. I lost a lot of good friends to these fears, yet I made lifelong friendships through my disease. I did not know it at the time, but my life had changed forever. After 2 ½ years of Chemo and Radiation, I was cured. I had a whole new outlook on life and wanted to share this newfound love for life with others. I wanted to live in the moment and help those around me as much as I could. I spread awareness of childhood cancer throughout the community and participated in many fundraisers for cancer. Now, at the age of 28, I am still active in many cancer organizations, live with my wonderful husband and our 3 pets, and do all I can to make the friends I have lost to cancer proud. Whenever I do something new or go to a new place, I think “they are all here with me… experiencing this for the first time with me.” You see, that’s the thing with childhood cancer. The children do not get to experience all that life has to offer; so we have to live our lives to the fullest for them until there is a cure. Help us find a cure by donating or joining the team this year!
