When Luca's sister, Alessandra, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2010 - no one suffered more than her - but Luca was definitely a close second. He was 4 years old when she was diagnosed and had already adapted to being the brother of a sister with special needs - which is not an easy task.
At four years old, Luca had to deal with his parents being away at the hospital for most of the year. He had to move to Boston for 6 weeks, live in the Ronald McDonald house, and start kindergarten at a school in Boston only to move back and start all over again. He witnessed the crying, the arguing, the complete exhaustion of two parents using every bit of their strength to get their baby girl through. And at the very young age of four, he understood and could articulate the horribleness that is cancer.
He made close friends, Aiden and Trevor at the Ronald McDonald house, only to find out that they died soon after. He did all of this and was the most amazing kid through it all that you could ever image. He rarely complained, rolled with the punches, spent many hours in hospital beds watching movies with his sister, stayed with whomever would watch him, and attended kindergarten in Boston without a peep.
We asked Luca if he wanted to shave his head to raise money this year and his initial response was no. We didn't want to push. We didn't think it would be fair. He came to us on his own and decided that he does want to do it - for his sister. Luca is a very special little boy and we hope you can support him in his efforts to raise money for pediatric cancer research. May he never have to meet another little boy who dies from this terrible disease.
