Hello friends, family, co-workers, random acquaintances, enemies, and former lovers:
I am writing to solicit money from you for a wonderful charity. The charity is the St. Baldrick's Foundation. Every St. Patrick's day the foundation sponsors a head-shaving fundraiser to support childhood cancer research. Participants shave their heads in solidarity with children undergoing cancer treatment. Founded in 1999 by Irish-American insurance executives, the charity has grown like an Irish Catholic family and 2000 has raised over $118 million. Events take place in all 50 states and over 28 countries. The money raised provides funds for numerous cancer research organizations. This year I am willing to sacrifice my thick dark brown beautiful locks to raise money for this worthy cause.
Many of you know I am and have great. It is dark, thick, and Blagojevichesque. I constantly look at myself in the mirror, while running my fingers through my velvet sheen. Incessantly, I rinse, wash, and repeat… but not for long. Now is your opportunity to relish in my aerodynamic pasty dome. You can laugh at me, but unfortunately not with me. I really like my hair, and the insulation it provides. It is going to be missed. If it is going to go, at least it is for a noble cause.
Where will you be on the day after the St. Patrick's Day holiday? You will most likely be in a warm bed with slight dehydration. I will be hung-over, most likely confused, cold, and very prone to sunburn.
All joking aside, I am participating in this year's St. Baldrick’s after being inspired by my friend Caron Summers's fight with cancer. Caron and her husband Wayne are regulars at the Kerry Piper Pub, where they are the heart soul of the community of regulars. They are the definition of salt of the earth people, and I consider myself fortunate to count them as friends. Caron's strength, infectious optimism, and tenacity in her fight is nothing short of extraordinary. She inspired me so much that I am committed to shedding my magnificent mane in solidarity with her and others on March 18th.
Over the past years I have participated in different roles, and found each event more touching than the last. Any donation is tax deductible, and will be greatly appreciated. You may be hung over on March 18th. But you won't be bald and hung-over (unless otherwise hairless). I am willing burden that cross for you my friends.
