From Vikki:
Several months ago I had the honor of meeting the most amazing young man, Jake Franzel. I learned that Jake was fighting Osteosarcoma. I learned that Osteosarcoma is the eighth most common form of childhood cancer and that 75% of cases of this disease occur in young adults less than 25 years of age. I learned that Jake was one of the most selfless people I have ever met, he always made sure in spreading the word and educating people about this illness that it was never about him, he let people know he was just one of so many individuals of all ages that suffer with cancer. I learned that Jake made an impact in the lives of everyone he met and as well as in the lives of those he never knew. I learned that there is nothing you can say to a mother who has lost her son to make the pain go away. I learned that life is short and we all have the power to make a difference in this world no matter what our situation. I learned that no matter how bad I think things are, there are families out there that are suffering in ways that I cannot imagine. I learned that it is so important not to let a day go by where you don't tell the ones that mean the most to you how you feel. I learned a lot from Jake Franzel and I am a better person from having met him.
Many of you know I met Jake's mother, Sue after she contacted the organization I work for wanting to host a blood drive in honor of Jake. During the course of his treatment at Cardinal Glennon, Jake would receive blood transfusions and the organization I work for is the sole provider of blood products to that hospital. Jake and his family thought it would be a good idea to host a blood drive as a way to 'give back' while raising awareness about the ongoing need for blood. In the short time that I knew Jake, he has inspired me in so many ways, I am blessed having known him. This is my way to 'give back' and raise awareness in honor of Jake!
From Zackery:
I heard my mom talk about Jake and all the things he did while he was sick. His story touched me and I think this is a good way to show support for all the things Jake worked for.
I'm having my head shaved to stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer, but more importantly, to raise money to find cures. Please support me with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. So when I ask for your support, I'm really asking you to support these kids. Thank you!
