My wife, Chrissy, is a pediatric oncology nurse at Children's Hospital in New Orleans. I've always been impressed by her ability to go to work on a regular basis and help kids of all ages who have all forms of cancer. In the years since she has worked at the hospital I have had the occasion to meet with some of the families of these children and even meet the patients themselves. The child I am honoring this year, Benny, is a boy who lives right around the corner from Chrissy and me. He is roughly the same age as my older daughter and he is a great kid who has had to deal with more than any child should ever have to deal with.
The St. Baldrick's website provides a pre-written message that starts off with the following words, "I've answered the call to be a hero! I'm having my head shaved to stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer, but more importantly, to raise money to find cures."
Trust me when I say this, I am not even close to being the hero in this scenario. The real heros are the kids, like Benny. I'm doing the easy part in shaving my head and trying to raise some money so that some day kids like Benny won't have to go through this fight.
Please support me with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U. S. government. Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. So when I ask for your support, I'm really asking you to support these kids. Thank you!
