This is my 5th year shaving my head for St. Baldricks!! I am shaving this year in honor of a 7 year old boy named Coleson. He was diagnosed with Leukemia when he was 3 years old. I was able to meet Coleson and his family and it really makes me proud that I am able to do what I do. He has been through so much and I think he is the bravest person I have ever met!! Here is Coleson's story as told by his mom....
"Coleson is the youngest of 3. He was a typical 3 yr old - now 7 years old. Coleson was diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL) on August 18th 2008. After a trip to the Iowa State Fair and a couple weeks of complaining of his legs hurting, he started to run a low grade fever for almost a week and then lost all of the color in his face, with a pale/gray look. We took him to see Dr. Olsen, his Peds Dr., and he sent us to the hospital for a battery of tests. Within 2 hours we had the diagnosis of Leukemia. Just the sound of the word was scary and from that moment on our world has been spinning. We were sent by ambulance to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital where we stayed in disbelief with this diagnosis for Coleson. He is now in his 4th month off treatment which he completed in October, 2011. We have lived through 3 + years of chemo infusions, multiple daily medications, blood transfusions, surgeries and countless hospital stays. He doesn't remember much of his life before he had cancer and we are convinced he doesn't know what it is like to REALLY feel well. His immune system is slowly returning and each day we witness his improving health as he runs, plays and laughs like any normal first grader. Coleson is a survivor and the bravest person we know!"
