I am doing this for one simple reason:
In October of 2010 my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. One of the obvious initial concerns, after general health, was the loss of her hair. Being a hair dresser myself, I have seen many women grieve this loss over the years. It is a situation a person can't imagine being confronted with. I immediately vowed to my mom that if she lost her hair, she would not have to be bald alone.
My mother did not lose her hair during that year, or the next. Her cancer was stagnant and some of our fears had calmed for a bit. But in December of 2011 we received news that the cancer was growing again. A more aggressive chemo was started immediately, and January of 2012 her hair began to fall out at a very rapid rate.
This is why I am shaving my head. Because I feel like this is a journey better walked by two people. Although my hair loss is a choice, I feel it is a way for me to show my love and support to my mom, in a time when no one can really know what it is like to lose something as personal as your hair.
Love, Sarah Petot (in honor of Donna Rosenberg)
