I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

As we all know, cancer continues to be one of the most devastating forms of disease in society today. Although ongoing research, technological advances, and early detection practices are truly making an impact in the struggle to defeat cancer, much work is still required. While cancer has no preference for victims, one group of sufferers we all struggle with in particular is children. Often times stricken at a very young age, they look forward to a long and full life through remission or the discovery of a cure for whatever type of cancer afflicts them. The costs of cancer research, therapy, and the financial burden on all that are affected is something that can be lessened by support from the community. One form of that support is through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation (www.stbaldricks.org). The mission of the foundation is as follows: The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Proudly I am not just a supporter, but I am also a volunteer ‘shavee’! What that means is along with a financial donation I make to the foundation, I volunteer to have my head shaved bald for others that support the foundation who would rather keep their locks intact. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, I participate as a shavee as a sign of solidarity for the many young lives that must face the challenge of cancer treatment, therapy, and recovery. Times are tough and tight for so know this, all donations are cherished and none are ever too small. My personal goal is $1,000, but I hope to exceed that amount this year by leaps and bounds. If you would like to attend the event to watch the shavees go bald, it will be held on March 10th, 2012 on the 8300 block of Oak Street (check back for a time).
