My name is Bethany, and I have survived childhood cancer twice. As you can no doubt guess, this puts our cause very near and dear to my heart. Since the time between my initial diagnosis of leukemia at age 7 and my relapse at 15 was long, I was able to see and experience firsthand the positive effects of advancements in cancer treatment. Since my relapse I have celebrated 6 (soon to be 7) cancer free years, and I have been a proud member of Cuts for Cancer Guelph for the last 3 of them. I know the importance of fundraising, because many of the advances in cancer treatment that helped me have been made possible through fundraising efforts such as ours.
My survival is also due in huge part to the continuous loving support from my family and friends. It was the positive attitude we kept throughout that made the difference in my fight against cancer. That's why I think it's so important to show your support - to fund the fight for a cure, but also to show those currently battling cancer that you are behind them every step of the way. Donating hair to create wigs gives you the chance to boost the self-esteem of a women or child going through cancer treatment. Even if this seems small, helping a cancer patient feel better about themselves during such a trying time can make a world of difference, and I can attest to that.
This year Cuts for Cancer and Childhood Cancer Canada is working with The St. Baldrick's Foundation, who partners with organizations around the world to fund childhood cancer research.
