I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research with: Austin Fire Department

Hey friends & family, Our day is almost here!  Alex and I will get our heads shaved Saturday in an effort to do our part in helping to find a cure for childhood cancers.  We have both been growing our hair out. Alex has gotten a few Justin Bieber comments.  Mine hasn't been this long since high school.  We are quickly approaching mullet territory here folks.  In the 17 years we've been together I've never had hair long enough for Shannon to run her fingers through.  She says she will miss it.  People around the Fire Department have been giving me a few nicknames like 'Ponch' (Eric Estrada).  I am grateful for the gift of a full head of hair, even with some gray, but kidding aside the sacrifice of giving it up is insignificant in comparison to this disease. I have dedicated my life to helping people, being the calm that shows up in a chaotic situation and this has been the only real thing that I can think of to do to fight cancer. We would appreciate any donation you can make to see us bald, but that is not all we need. Pray!  Pray for the children and adults fighting this fight, for their caretakers and families.  A prayer can go a long way. Visit!  If you happen to be at a hospital and have a few minutes go by the oncology department and ask the nurses station if there is someone there who needs a visitor or pick-me-up, go in, say Hi!  We hope you feel better and I want you to have a great day today.  Everyone needs a friend. We have amazing friends and family, when both my kids where born our hospital room was overrun with flowers. Before we left the hospital, while my wife and kids where getting ready to leave, my sister-in-law and I took those gifts and went to the oncology department and asked the nurse who needed flowers in there room. We delivered them to several rooms and you could not imagine the surprise and smile that would melt your heart. They all asked happily, who they were from and we said Alex Martinez and Ava Martinez and they would say tell Alex and Ava THANK YOU. And to those that have donated, those that will donate, those that will say a prayer, those that will make a special visit and those that will find a way to take on cancer in their own way. THANK YOU. We will be at Fado's on West 4th street and we get our heads shaved at 11am. Everyone is welcome and there is a parade that starts at 9am going down Congress and ending at Fado's. http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/participantid/435154  (for Alex) http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/participantid/426338   (for Eddie) Eddie & Alex Martinez

You heard it right - I'm shaving my head in solidarity with children who have cancer and typically lose their hair during treatment, while raising critical funds for childhood cancer research!

In the US, more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease. Please make a donation on my behalf to support childhood cancer research so that all children diagnosed with cancer will have a better chance for a cure.
