46 years ago, at the age of 10, I lost my best friend to cancer. In September of 2008, I was diagnosed with colon cancer. I was lucky in that early detection and immediate surgery left me cancer free. My personal brush with cancer was scary enough, but as scared as I was at the age of 54, how scary must it be for a child or the parents of a child to hear those words, 'you have cancer' ? I wonder how my friend felt when he first heard, or his mother?
I became involved with St. Baldrick's the February following my surgery with this being my 3rd year. I was looking for someway to get involved raising funds to support cancer research when I heard about this organization. I did my homework, read about where the funds go and the stories of the children it helps and hopes to help. And who knows, along the way, the research being funded by St. Baldrick's may even uncover cures for adult cancers. I also liked the symbolism of having my head shaved which shows solidarity with those who loose their hair as a result of more aggressive cures for cancer.
I am asking all my friends who read this to PLEASE DONATE to this worthwhile cause. These are tough economic times so no donation is too small. Your support is very much appreciated!!
