Two years ago my daughter (a 6th grader at the time) came to me and said she wanted to shave her head because her friend Matt had gone through chemo and lost his hair and didn't want to come back to school because he was bald. That really touch me but I told her rather than her shaving her head, I would do it.
When I walked into The Knitting Factory in 2009 a rush of emotions hit me. There were children there that had cancer along with their families. They kept telling thanks for what I was doing. I was thinking that all I was doing was shaving my head. I had the easy job. They had to fight this terrible disease.
This past Thanksgiving weekend, Matt lost his battle with Cancer.
Now I am wondering why I didn't shave my head more to raise more money for cancer research. Maybe if I could have raised more money they would have found the cure for cancer. You never know when somebody will find it or how much research money it will take. It might be one of the dollars that you pledge that pays for the research that finds the cure.
I'm shaving my head in solidarity with children who have cancer and typically lose their hair during treatment, while raising critical funds for childhood cancer research! In the US, more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease. Please make a donation on my behalf to support childhood cancer research so that all children diagnosed with cancer will have a better chance for a cure.
