I'm shaving my head in solidarity with children who have cancer and typically lose their hair during treatment, while raising critical funds for childhood cancer research!
In the US, more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease. St. Baldrick's fills a critical need in funding pediatric cancer research, especially now during times of flat (or potentially decreasing) NIH funding. St. Baldrick's is the second largest funder of pediatric cancer research in the United States, after the NIH. Pediatric cancer is the number 2 killer of children in the US - accidents are number 1.
In 1950, essentially every child with cancer died. Now thanks to clinical and basic science research, most children have a great chance of surviving their cancer. For some types of leukemia, survival rates are 95%. In the next 20 years, we have a chance to make a great impact in those tumors, such as brain tumors, which have the worst prognosis. St. Baldrick's is leading the way in funding research into the types of pediatric cancer that have the worst prognosis.
Please make a donation on my behalf to support childhood cancer research so that all children diagnosed with cancer will have a better chance for a cure.
