I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research with: UNC Air Care & Friends

Hey there! Thanks for participating in this great event! For those of you who don't know me, I'm David Witek, a staff nurse at UNC Hospitals' Emergency Department. Cancer care has always held a special place in my heart, and I'm honored to give a little piece of myself to find a cure. Prior to becoming an ED nurse, I worked extensively with cancer patients as an adult and pediatric bone marrow transplant nurse. I saw how this disease devastated the lives of my patients, their families, and all those who loved and cared for them. However, it wasn't until my own father was diagnosed with cancer that I truly came to understand the reality of that statement. For 5 years, he endured countless surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy -- handling it all with the fight and vigor anyone could ever expect. However, he lost his battle 2 weeks ago, and I lost my mentor and friend. My Dad was a giver. He gave until it hurt. More than that, he was a lover of children and could not bear to see a little one in pain. While my participation in St. Baldrick's is a tribute to him, I also recognize the need to honor his memory by giving to those who need it the most. You see, my Dad's disease came after a fruitful and amazing life. He did more with his 66 years than most could ever dream. However, these little guys are just getting the chance to recognize their dreams. We need to give them the chance to see their wildest dreams fulfilled. In that spirit, please donate to St. Baldrick's. Check out our team, UNC Air Care, and the little guy we're supporting. Give him the opportunity to have a fruitful and amazing life, too.
