As you probably figured out by now, St. Baldrick's Foundation was established to raise funds for kid's cancer research. Volunteers ask for donations in exchange for having their heads shaved. Not just a little trim around the sides, SHAVED!
What many of you may not know however is this is not the first time to shave my head in the name of cancer. Several years ago, Ellen Ryan, my "baby" sister, was diagnosed with breast cancer. --Yes, she is in her 40s and I still refer to her as my baby sister. My parents and each of my siblings took turns traveling to California every two weeks to help her along between Chemo treatments.
As a show of solidarity, several of us shaved our heads before going to visit her. When it was my turn, I went strait from the airport to the clinic where she was receiving treatment. She was sleeping through the IV drip, so I got a kick out of seeing her smile when she awoke to my bald head staring back at her. Fast forward several more treatments and surgeries later, both of our hair grew back, and she has a clean bill of health as far as the cancer goes. This year will actually mark 5 years cancer free for her, a BIG milestone in cancer terms. SO, I will once again shave my head in her honor, and to help someone else's baby sister beat back cancer --I would shave my head every day if meant finding a cure, but it's not that easy. They need our money for research, so please help by clicking the donation button and throw in a few bucks to sponsor me.
--And I will gladly buy you a pint if you also show up at Fado's March 13 to see me get shaved and toast to Ellen's good health
Slainte,
John
