"Next up to go bald to help cure childhood cancer is the team, let me make sure I have this right, the Shiny Pompadours!..."
That was our cue. Jessica, Chris and myself went from being audience members, thoroughly enjoying watching others get their melons shaved to being the ones in the spotlight. We walked up the 5 steps, onto the stage at the Fox Theatre and were warmly greeted by the audience, especially since we had one of the few women who had bravely volunteered to go bald.
The theatre was pretty full with around 300 people. The audience consisted of shavees, childhood cancer patients and their families and general community members who came out to support the event.
The three of us sat down on stage and were donned with aprons. The shavers introduced themselves, clicked on the shavers and went to work.
I couldn't believe all the hair that was falling past my eyes. I didn't know I was that shaggy! With each pass of the shaver, I felt lighter and the energy from the crowd grew and then peeked with light-hearted clapping when all three of us were completely bald. Our shavers put a mirror in front of us and we all laughed heartily as we looked at the shiny pompadours reflecting back at us, .
What a great event! And thanks to your generosity, we accomplished our fundraising goal in helping to find a cure for childhood cancer. We were proud to be a part of the Boulder event as it raised over $100,000. And most importantly, you helped us give hope to the kids we met who are battling cancer. Each child I met was a special and brave youngster who just wants to be a kid. I think we helped, if even just a little bit, with that cause,
And as I mentioned before, part of me shaved my melon in support of Max (our Labrador recently diagnosed with cancer). Her belly was shaved for tests and now I have a shaved melon. I know she'll conquer her cancer as will the youngsters I met at the event.
Thanks again!
Erick
PS Interesting tidbits on having a shiny pompadour:
1. Man, it's cold having no hair. Even the slightest draft gives you a chill!
2. I can't stop rubbing my melon. It's so different and just way cool,
3. Oh, and others can't stop rubbing my melon either. I don't get it. They can't stop themselves, I guess there's just something magnetic about a shaved melon, I should charge a dollar for each rub,
4. I feel so light and free.
5. Shampoo? What's that?...
