I am shaving my head again this year in honor of my youngest daughter Colleen who lost her battle with osteogenic sarcoma in June of 2008. As deeply as I miss Colleen and am so very saddened at her not being with my family, I am more upset by the pain and suffering she had to go through, as well as the things she never got to do and experience because her life was cut short. Please donate to St. Baldricks to help raise awareness and fund research and treatment of childhood cancer so that fewer kids will have to go through what Colleen did -- and fewer families will have to experience our loss.
I am also hoping to raise awareness of Striving for More (striving4more.org), the foundation my wife, Diane, has started to fund psycho-social care for kids with cancer. Psycho-social care is extremely important, not only for the emotional well-being of cancer patients, but to the effectiveness of their treatment and to the mental and emotional health of their loved ones. Most hospitals not not have funding for programs to support this need.
Lastly, it seems that cancer has impacted the lives of more people I know this past year than in previous years. Most of these people are not children (but sadly, some are). All of these people are fighting their own battles with various forms of this awful disease and I am thinking of them and honoring them anonymously as well.
